The Pre-Selection Tests refer to the first step in the EPSO evaluation process, after applications have been accepted and eligibility has been checked, where candidates have to take a series of computer-based, multiple-choice tests. When there are a large number of applicants, e.g. more than 8 to 10 times the applicants than places on the reserve list, EPSO usually requires pre-selection tests that precede, and are completely separate from, the Assessment Centre.
For Specialist exams, where the number of applicants is generally lower, these tests become part of the Assessment Centre. In this case the score does not count towards the final AC score, the candidate just has to reach the pass mark.
Typically, the pre-selection tests always include reasoning skills tests (verbal, numerical, abstract). Depending on the type and level of the competition, other types of tests, like professional skills tests, or SJTs, may also be included. This is always detailed in the Notice of Competition or Call for Expressions of Interest.
