The scratchpad is essentially a comment box that is appeared whenever you select a word on the PDF "scratchpad" and it will turn yellow and then by pointing the mouse on the marked-yellow word a small blue icon will appear and by pressing on that a small box will appear next, where it is possible to write a text.
