How to apply to an EPSO competition (step-by-step guide)

EU Training

EPSO competition application guide – start your EU career journey with a step-by-step overview.

Grab a cup of tea, this might take a while

No really—make yourself comfortable. Applying to an EPSO competition is not something you’ll want to rush through on your lunch break. It's not just a form you fill out; it's more like a mini-marathon of eligibility checks, uploading documents, and writing essays about your motivation. But don’t worry—I'm applying too, and I’ve been through the maze so I’ll walk you through the whole thing, step by step.

Let’s start from the very beginning (yes, even logging in counts).

Step 1: Create your EU Login and access the Single Candidate Portal

You’d think this part would be straightforward. It’s just a login, right? Well… welcome to your first EPSO hurdle.

Registering on the Single Candidate Portal is not easy. If you've got an EU login account great, if not, prepare for a few possible bumps.

The two-factor authentication system (2FA) can be buggy, especially if you don’t have the EU Login app already connected to a profile. You’ll need the "login with password only" option, but it doesn’t always appear...If that happens:

  • Try this link. This should automatically forward you to the password page.

  • Try switching to incognito mode

  • Use a different browser

  • Or simply try again later (coming back the next day worked for me)

Important: Do not leave the application for the last day.

Step 2: Click “Apply for a Competition”

Once you're in, you’ll see the list of open competitions. Click on the one you’re applying for, and hit “Apply”.

At this point, the process becomes a bit more predictable. You’ll go through a series of sections, most of which are just forms to fill in. But don’t speed through it—some parts are more important than others and will be reused later in the selection process.

Here’s what you’ll need to complete:

2.1 Eligibility data

This is basically the EPSO version of: “Are you even allowed to apply?”

Overview of EPSO application sections including eligibility, CV, motivation, and declarations.

You’ll be asked to confirm you meet all the general and specific conditions listed in the Notice of Competition:

  • I’m an EU citizen (or from a country listed in the competition notice)

  • I enjoy full rights as a citizen

  • I’ve fulfilled my military obligations (if applicable)

  • I meet the good character requirements

  • I have the required qualifications

  • I meet the work experience criteria (if required)

  • I meet the language requirements

Each one of these will be a checkbox. Don’t tick anything unless you’re sure—these will be double-checked during the eligibility review.

2.2 Registration data

This is the standard personal info section:

  • Full name

  • Date of birth

  • Contact details

  • Nationality

Make sure everything matches your passport or ID, as you’ll need to upload documents later to prove it.

2.3 CV details

This section is your structured online CV. EPSO has split this into three parts:

2.3.1 Work experience

List your jobs, internships, or relevant volunteering. Add short but clear descriptions of your tasks and responsibilities. Use bullet points and be precise.

2.3.2 Education and training

Degrees, diplomas, certifications. Start with the most recent. Include start/end dates and institutions.

2.3.3 Language skills

List all the EU languages you speak and specify your level (A1–C2). You’ll also choose your Language 1 (testing language) and Language 2 (main working language).

2.3.4 Upload your ID

Scan of your passport or national ID. Make sure the file is clear and legible.

2.4 Motivation and strengths

This is where things get serious. You’ll be asked to write answers (up to 2000 characters each) for different questions:

  • Motivation and strengths

  • Experience and background

  • Interest in the competition

  • Contribution to the EU

  • What are your key strengths?

Take your time here. These sections can come back later in the process—your motivation statements might be used at the interview stage or for eligibility checks. Write them carefully and save copies in a separate document.

2.5 Final declarations

You’ll be asked to confirm that everything you wrote is accurate and complete. Then it’s time to submit your application.
