AD/338/17 - LANGUAGE 1 AND 2

dbasileo91_88184 Mon, 04/03/2017 - 19:12

Dear all,

I'm sorry but I'm a bit confused. In the current online application for Ad 5 Generalist Competition, it is asked citizenship and language skills, with the specification that I will chose language 1 and language 2 after.

In the language skills, I did not put my mother tongue (Italian), because it is obvious that I am fluent in Italian. Does it mean that I will not be able to choose Italian as language 1? That is, language 1 and language 2 will be chosen according to the languages declared in the language skills?

I hope my question is clear and that someone could answer me.

Thank you all

I am sorry but being Italian

Hi Mon, 04/03/2017 - 22:06

I am sorry but being Italian does not make it obvious that you are fluent in Italian. There are various life situations. There are countries with two official EU languages...at leastthere is one I know.

I would understand that if you have not listed Italian in language skills you cannot chose it as L1 later on. I hope you have not submitted yet.

Read again the information and in the online application form. It is mentioned to indicate all the EU language you speak. So if you are fluent in Italien, mother tongue why not indicating it even first in the list?

I let people from EU training reply. At least personally I am planning to indicate my mother tongue, and all the EU languages I speak at level B2 while strategically thinking of those that are likely to be in the top 5 according to EPSO criteria and which I speak of course!

I had also this doubt but

I had also this doubt but reading the vacancy notice it is said:  "you will also have to select your languages 1 and 2 from amongst the languages you already declared in the first part of the application form". So I understand that if you have not declared Italian, you cannot chose it later.

But, yes can someone from EU Training confirm this?

E.g. I want to take the CBT in French (mother tongue), I also speak English and Italian at least B2 I declare all the 3 languages, right?

Hello Sonja,

Yes, you must declare all your languages. Language one will be available anyway in all the official EU languages (even if not declared at your profile). And for Language 2 you still have to wait to see all the possible options.

However you must declare ALL your languages (higer than B2) at the first part. In the second part you will be only disqualified if you did not mention any option available as language 2.

E.g. The "concept" mother tongue makes no sense at this process, language 1 will be just the language you choose for the first part, mother tongue or not, and for this part your options are always higher because you can choose from 24 different tongues.

Hope this can help :)

@dbasileo91_88184 If you already validated your application you should contact EPSO inmediately.

I am also slightly confused

pingoo Wed, 04/05/2017 - 21:36

I am also slightly confused with the new language regime. Being French, I wonder whether I should declare French as language 1 and then English as language 2, or whether I should do the contrary, which would allow me to do the assessment center tests in French. Any views?

Hi Pingoo,

Hi Pingoo,

I am in the same situation. It is not clear whether language 1 should be the one you master best, and language 2 the second one. So there might be a strategic choice to be made...

To be noted as well: the quality of the verbal reasoning test in FR in the past years was not excellent, might be clearer in EN.

I will ask EPSO for further information and keep posted.

In the meantime, any advice welcome!

Marie

Hello guys,

Hello guys,

Do you have any info from EPSO regarding the selection of Language 1?

Can we choose as Language 1, a language that was not inserted in our application?

Thanks,

Elena

@dbasileo91_88184,

Dear,

Did you get a solution for this issue? I have the same problem as you and although I contacted EPSO I do not have the confirmation that I could use my mother tongue as a first language

Regards :(

I belive it is pretty obvious

I belive it is pretty obvious from the call for expression of interest. If you dont decalre your mother tongue; you wont be able to choose this langiage in the 2nd phase of application and thus you wont be able to sit the exam in this  language
