Physical calculators forbidden in the CBT!

I just received the official news from EPSO themselves. How can they do that? Now we all have to rely on that annoying on-screen calculator...

I will have CBT soon, but I have not received anything about the physical calculators. Have you received that news from EPSO or from Prometric?

Directly from EPSO in an email:  "In the framework of this selection procedure, please note that a handheld calculator for the numerical reasoning test will NOT be available anymore. It will not be possible to use a handheld calculator neither in test centre, neither during a remotely proctored test. An onscreen calculator is available for both testing methods."

Wow, that is another level, "bravo" EPSO! How annoying.

There is an exception for CAST selection procedures where it is allowed. It is also mentioned on EPSO FAQ/Help pages.

Will it be possible to read the questions and the tables with the figures while using their onscreen calculator or would the onscreen calculator overlap with the above? If the latter, then it is going to be difficult to answer all the numerical questions in the given time.

Does anyone know if this is still the case in current competitions ?. Maybe now that the situation with covid, is "under control", they allow the hand-calculators ?. I hate the onscreen ones, it makes it much slower to do any operation. (My CBT is in June)

Hello everyone,

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to share my exprience, since I took the CBT last year in an accredited center with an onscreen calculator.

Indeed at first I thought it would be very difficult, but in the end I managed. I clicked on the numbers and symbols on the on-screen calculator.

I didn't try to use the keybord numbers, so I can't tell you if they work or not, but I found it easier and safer to click on the numbers and see them written at the same time instead of looking at the keybord and the screen in alternance.

Also I could move the calculator wherever I wanted on the screen and I could make it disappear and reappear with a mouse click.

Of course please keep in mind that this was last year so I don't know if they have changed anything else by now.

I find it more fair that everyone has to use the online calculator, whether at home or in an accredited center. Everyone has the same features on their calculator. If they allowed people who are taking the test from home to use a physical calculator, they would have had access to more options/features than the ones in the test center.

Best of luck to everyone!

Many thanks for your input.

Many thanks for your input.

I was wondering if they also removed the erasable board ? how do you manage when you have to do various calculations to get the answer. Are we expected to memorise the numbers in our head ?. If that is the case I am doomed :)
