Hi, I have a question reagrding AD vs FG groups. I understand that they are different streams but to me it looks like for example for my position that AD would have much higher salary. The jobs posted in AD stream for someone like me are areound AD 7 and 8 while in FG I can get maximum FG IV.
The question is if I get the oportunity to work for in FG IV, should I accept it since I am not going to get salary that would be higher then I am having now, or should I wait for AD 7 & 8 positions?
Is it possible once when you get hired as FG IV to apply for AD positions that are better paid, and is it maybe better to get hired on any position in EU institution and then try from inside? I have a feeling that once you get hired at FG IV, you are basically stuck and there is no where higher to go.
Any information would be greatly appretiated.

Did you pass a competition? Otherwise you cannot apply to AD positions. Moving to a higher FG is rare. Expect to be stuck in the FG you are hired.
I passed the test for FG IV
I passed the test for FG IV and interview, I am at the last stage of hirring (medical and documentation). I have not apply for AD 7&8 since there is no current openings for my field. That is what I am affraid of, to get stuck. AD has way higher salary and they can move up, FG can`t move up.
The only way I would accept this possition is that if it would allow me to apply for AD somwhere down the road (even with different agency) and if it would be beneficial if I am already working in EU institution.

As I said: You cannot apply to AD positions if you have not passed an AD competition first.
AD7 competitions are not as frequent as AD5 competitions. After some time there might be an internal competition that is open to contract agents too, but they are also quite competitive and the profiles they define might not match your profile.

Oh and for the last internal competition in the Commission only AD6 was open to contract agents (with 36 months inside the institutions). So forget about moving to AD7 or even AD8 directly.

It does not have to be Commission, it can be any EU institution. Obviously in a desirable location. I know ECB and Europol had recent AD7 temporary and AD8 temporary job openings. I belive that those can translate to permanent after the contract expires (maybe they renewe it once and then permanent).
I forgot to mention that I work in IT sector and that the are of my experties is somwhere around AD7 & 8 (IT Specialist).
What I am being basically offered now is FG IV for a IT Team Lead. I think that the FG IV salary is to low for team lead in IT sector (I make more now in private sector). However, I would consider the possition if there would be any possibility to get bumped to AD possition in a future. It does not make sense to be Team Lead in IT with FG IV until rest of your career.
Does anyone has experience with getting promotion while working in EU agencies or institutions, are those oportunities rare? Also, did anyone do the transfer between institutions or agencies?

If your field is IT then why do you say that there are currently no openings for your field??? There are AD8 temporary agents competions open currently. Deadline was extended until 20 February. Pass one of those and you'll get your place on an AD8 reserve list.

If you are refering to the ones in European Commission none of the roles are for developer, at least not from what I have read in the article. Maybe I should apply, if they like my resume they call me either way.
But to expand on this a little, if I accept current offer at FG IV, would that put me in better position for any future competitions? I heard about option of moving between institutions and agencies ones you are in, but I am not sure how that functions in practice and can you move from FG to AD (probably not).

I got asked to submit documentation for FG IV position, they asked for copy of documents before they submit offical offer, that is the standard process. I`ll accept the offer if they do offer it but with C-19 issue everything is very slow and it even may be canceled.
