FGIII, FGIV or both?

Hello :) I'm in need of some advise. I have a law degree, so I'm wondering of applying for Law Cast FGIV and Political affairs Cast FGIV. At the same time, I think that I can improve my chances if I also apply for FGIII of the same two functions, but I see that for FGIII no degree is requested, while just the diploma is needed. Do you think that FGIII mansions are too low, compared to the possibilities and knowledge related to a degree? Actually I cannot figure out somebody without a degree carrying out those mansions (for example, "Contributing to studies and research into national, Community and international law in
the area of justice and home affairs; Contributing to the analysis and preparation of draft opinions and legal notes"), but I don't want to waste time with a selection which would lead to a position that is not likely to satisfy me. Thank you very much for your patience! ;)

The fact is that due to budget reasons, the vast majority of those who have been hired as FG III do the exact same work as those hired as FG IV. On paper, of course, it's all about "contributing" and "assisting", etc. but in reality there is no question of simply "contributing"; you are expected to take full responsibility and work independently. This is especially true for the Law profile. It is very difficult to obtain a FG IV contract; the Commission much prefers to give FG III only. Why wouldn't they; for them it's a win-win as they get the same legal skills for less money. It's not fair but what can you do.. So, if you are willing to work as an FG III and do the same work as FG IV (and there are many who are willing to do so), signing up to the FG III will greatly increase your changes of being hired.

Thank you very much, JaGyGy.

Thank you very much, JaGyGy. May I ask you if you are speaking from experience, or maybe you were informed by people who had that experience? Thank you :)

Hi Irene,

I've been in a similar situation. I really understand you. I've applied for casts for FGIV  and FGIII. I've been contacted for many FGIII positions as there are not many opportunities for FGIV.  I refused all of them. If you have a legal profile, I do encourage you to go look for a job outside the EU Institutions. Even though EU career has been always my dream, I found a job in a private sector in EU law in Brussels with a great work-life balance, salary at FGIV level and a permament contract. I keep taking part in EPSO competition but once I will move, I will move for a real deal. I have many friends with law degrees working as FGIII while doing the job of FGIV. It's extremely frustrating. Don't sell yourself cheap, I'm sure you've invested a lot in your education.

HI Ada,

really intersting your post. Could you give me more information about private sector, permanent job?  are you living on your own or having familiy with you? I would love to pass an EU competition and move to Brussels, but 2 children, that they are growing up so I think the more time passes by the harder their adaptation could be, maybe? please give me your impression about this, starting new life in Brussels.
