General Competencies

General competencies are ‘soft skills.’ Soft skills help us do our jobs. They allow us to effectively and efficiently use our technical skills and knowledge. They improve the way we interact with other people. They enable us to get our work done on time and to meet the expectations of our fellow workers, managers, and customers. They influence how we feel about our jobs, our motivation and how others perceive us. General competencies are behaviours to be displayed by all staff members, in all the EU institutions, no matter which function they have.

EPSO Competencies are the seven plus one (7 +1) skills and abilities that are measured throughout the EPSO Assessment Centre's various tests, such as the SCBI, the Competency-Based Interview, the Oral Presentation and others. Competencies in an EU context are the following:

  • Analysing & Problem Solving
  • Communication
  • Delivering Quality & Results
  • Learning & Development
  • Prioritising & Organising
  • Resilience
  • Working with Others
  • Leadership (AD5 Generalists, or Administrators, are evaluated on this competency as well, making it a total of 8 for them)
