Language Rules / Requirements

All EPSO competitions will require you to speak/read/write in at least two official EU Languages. These are referred to as Language 1 and Language 2.

  • Language 1 - generally, you can choose from any of the 24 official languages of the European Union. These include Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Irish, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenia, Slovene, Spanish and Swedish.
  • Language 2 - Your Language 2 choice will be more targeted because EPSO will specify a very narrow selection of languages that you can pick from - most often it is only English, French, very occasionally German.
  • Language 3 - If you are taking part in a Linguist or Translator competition, it is possible that you will have to choose a third language as well.

Choosing your languages for most EPSO competitions is relatively straightforward because the language options are clearly stated in the official Notice of Competition when it is released.
