Hi there,

where to find more information on how much time can you take off for maternity leave (well my wife) as well as parental leave? Staff Regulation is rather limited in saying 4 months...what next?

Parental leave is an individual entitlement and may not be refused.

Staff is entitled to parental leave for each child, to be taken during the first 12 years after the birth or adoption of the child.

From 1 January 2014, an official shall be entitled to 12 months of parental leave:

  • basic entitlement of 6 months for every child with a monthly allowance of 1.030,72€
  • extension for a further 6 months with a 50% reduction in the monthly allowance

Parental leave for parents of dependent children with a disability or a severe illness (as recognised by the institution's medical officer):

  • basic entitlement of 12 months with a monthly allowance of 1.374,30€
  • extension for a further 6 months with a 50% reduction in the monthly allowance

Parental leave for single parent:

  • basic entitlement of 12 months with a monthly allowance of 1.374,30€
  • extension for a further 12 months with a 50% reduction in the monthly allowance

The minimum duration for parental leave is 1 month - with no possibility of exceptions (Article 42a of the Staff Regulation).
